A Journey in Faith: Reflecting on My Time in Seattle
Leaving a place you love is never easy, especially when that place has been a significant part of your life's work. After nearly seven transformative years at First Church Seattle, I find myself faced with this bittersweet departure as I step away from downtown ministry in July 2024.
Early Challenges and Community Values
When I accepted the role of senior pastor in 2017, it was a time of considerable upheaval within both the church and society. The 2016 General Conference of The United Methodist Church had upheld its ban on LGBTQ+ inclusion, a stance that felt outdated and unjust in rapidly changing times. Simultaneously, the prevailing political climate sought to dismantle vital social safety nets, creating an urgent need for activism within communities of faith.
Despite my unique background—previously an associate pastor rather than a senior leader, and leading in a vibrant urban setting with a socially conscious congregation—I was ready to embark on this journey. What made First Church Seattle special was its commitment to both progressive theology and active community engagement, drawing a diverse congregation that included activists, healthcare workers, and community advocates.
Highlights of Spiritual Growth and Community Action
The first 1000 days at First Church Seattle were filled with hope and accomplishment. Witnessing growth in our children’s ministry alongside a thriving adult program was both exhilarating and inspiring. Our youth confirmation classes reached the largest cohorts in years, and the congregation's outreach programs flourished, serving vulnerable populations in tangible ways.
Our mission was to blend spiritual guidance with social action, a balance that fueled the congregation’s passion and commitment. From fundraising to eliminate our mortgage to hosting national church gatherings, every moment felt like stepping towards a brighter future, underlined by a shared vision of love and support.
A New Chapter Ahead
As I prepare for a new chapter, I carry with me the love, challenges, and lessons learned in Seattle. The lasting impact of this community will shape my ministry and spiritual journey for years to come. As we embrace change, I am reminded of the powerful words of wisdom from Scripture: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). Indeed, this journey is not merely an ending but a poignant step towards new beginnings.
For those still walking their faith journey, remember that every ending is simply a prelude to growth and transformation. Seek love and hope in your paths and engage in the world around you. As I leave Seattle, I am filled with gratitude for this community and excitement for what lies ahead.
