Catholic schools in England have emerged as the most ethnically diverse educational institutions in the country. According to the latest report from the Catholic Education Service (CES), nearly a quarter (24.6%) of staff in Catholic schools come from ethnic minority backgrounds, significantly surpassing the national average of 16.2% in state-funded schools.
For the student body, the diversity is just as striking. Out of 817,784 students in Catholic state-funded schools, almost half (47.2%) hail from ethnic minority groups, compared to the 38.7% average seen across all state schools. This diversity not only encompasses different ethnicities but also a significant multi-faith presence, where over 86% of the student population comes from a faith background, including non-Catholic denominations.
Fostering Community Cohesion
Paul Barber, the Director of CES, emphasizes that the appeal of Catholic schools lies in their respect for various faiths, which fosters community harmony. The curriculum reflects this commitment, dedicating 10% of classroom time to Religious Education, including a comprehensive exploration of non-Christian faiths like Sikhism and Islam. This broader educational approach not only enriches student understanding but also cultivates acceptance and respect among diverse populations.
Supporting Disadvantaged Communities
Beyond promoting diversity, Catholic schools play a crucial role in aiding disadvantaged communities. Data indicate that these schools educate 51.5% more children from the most deprived areas than the national average. Many Catholic schools offer direct support programs, such as uniform grants and breakfast clubs, helping families in need. Barber states, “The CES shares the government's mission to close the disadvantage gap within education.”
