Transforming Grief into Action: The 3rd Annual RAWtools Maker Marathon
As society confronts the gravity of gun violence, one initiative stands out this June: the 3rd Annual RAWtools Maker Marathon. In a poignant reminder that every life lost to gun violence matters, this year, a coalition of Blacksmiths, Woodworkers, Artists, and Makers dedicates one minute of creative work for each of the 40,000 lives tragically taken last year.
A Focus on the Future: Creating for Kids
This year’s theme targets a most vulnerable demographic—children. Gun violence is now the leading cause of death for U.S. kids under 18, outpacing cancer and car accidents. In response, RAWtools' talented makers are crafting toys, games, garden tools, and puzzles designed for children. These creations not only honor the memories of those lost but also aim to engage and support the well-being of our youngest generation.
Spreading Hope Through Literature
Complementing the Maker Marathon is the newly released children’s book, Sparking Peace, written by Teresa Kim Pecinovsky and Hannah Rose Martin. This important resource offers caregivers practical guidance on discussing the sensitive topic of gun violence with children, fostering hope and resilience. The book serves as both an educational tool and a beacon of light in dark times.
Join the Movement: Be a Part of the Solution
The Marathon runs from May 31 to June 30, with livestream events showcasing makers at work accessible through the RAWtools Facebook page. Tracking daily progress and participating in this creative outpouring is not just inspiring; it’s essential.
As Christians and advocates for peace, embracing this cause echoes a vital belief: “Blessed are the Peace-Makers.” Engaging in this movement not only honors those affected by gun violence but also contributes to a greater call for compassion and action. Together, we can challenge the norms that allow such tragedies to persist, shifting the narrative from grief to a united pursuit of safety and hope.
